Operation Motorman (Part 1) | ||

This Documentary was shown on the evening of 31/07/1972 as British army's Operation Motorman had removed IRA no-go areas from Derry and Belfast and other Northern Ireland towns. The Programme begins with the journalist Alan Harte giving a verbal summary of what he saw at the Creggan estate as he entered with Scottish soldiers. Then SDLP MP John Hume in an interview gives an update on what has happened to date, he mentions the killing of two youths, he says the road ahead is a political road to a political solution, he criticises Whitelaw's impartiality for not clearing UDA no go zones. His emphasis is on political means, political change and not violence. He says Whitelaw is reacting to right wing pressure from Brian Faulkner; he says peace isn't helped by only Nationalist areas being invaded by British army. Next B. Faulkner gives his reaction to the army operation, He's happy that rule of law is now across Northern Ireland. He mentions the Claudy bomb but thinks Motorman should have been done last April. Faulkner rejects idea that he was to blame for not stopping UDA no-go areas. He blames British Government for not moving against IRA, and for talking away his Stormont powers. He rejects Government talks with the IRA. He says power has gone to the streets; he calls for elected representative talks and rejects the idea Catholics are discriminated against. Then Alan Harte's final comments. Next from No 10 PM Edward Heath is interviewed by Robin Day, he explains why Operation Motorman couldn't have been done early or under B. Faulkner, Heath claims he's impartial praises Whitelaw's efforts and says in Northern Ireland every area subject to law and order. On UDA areas he again says they will remove illegal arms with impartiality he wants urgent political talks now, he rejects the idea Catholics will be driven into arms of IRA as B. Devlin claimed. He reaffirms Ireland Act of 1949 pledge of Northern Ireland staying within the union until the majority of population says otherwise. He mentions a referendum on the border being held the result of which the British government will honour, he then comments on Irish PM Jack Lynch's attitude to the IRA.
