Who Bombed Birmingham?
Description:
This is a drama reconstruction of the events from 21 November 1974. The funeral of IRA bomber James McDaid, the Birmingham pub bomb which killed twenty-one people and the arrest, interrogation and conviction of the six men who innocent of the crime became known as the Birmingham six. Its written by Bob Ritchie, and explores the role of Chris Mullen (Labour MP), TV producers Charles Trevelyn and Ian McBride who were behind the 1985 World in Action TV programme which promoted the innocence of the six men, and began increasing efforts to have them released. The programme reconstructs Dr Skues forensic tests, the beating of the prisoners, in Morecombe Police Station, the later refusal of most police officers to talk to the programme makers, the programme pieces together the discrediting of the forensic evidence and brining out the role of police and wardens in beating out the confessions from the men. Meanwhile Chris Mullen (MP) tours Ireland trying to get some information from Republicans on who did carry out the attack. Clip of the World in Action programme shown. Chris Mullen efforts eventually reveal the names of the men who did the bombings. Meanwhile Skuse (scientist) forced to take early retirement raises doubts about his reliability, Midland's Police interview Mullin, on the identities he knew, forced to do so by the Mellor (British Home Secretary) then a former policeman comes forward with an account of the beating of the prisoners and of them being threatened with a shotgun. On 22 June 1987 in Commons government referees case to Court of Appeal, at this time Devon and Cornwall police begin new inquiries. In November 1987 the appeal begins at the Old Bailey, reconstruction of evidence given shows police close ranks, even though Lyness (WPC) changed her view to support the six, the judges rejected the appeal. Press turn on Chris Mullen "the loaney MP", then a police SB file is left with World in Action team, giving SB account of IRA in Birmingham since 1975, they decide to trace the actual bombers named in the SB file. The programme ends at this point, with written summaries on the screen of the bombers whereabouts at present (1990).
