Bloody Sunday: The Secret History
Description:
The events of 'Bloody Sunday', 30 January 1972. On 30 January 1972, twenty-six people shot by British Army at Derry Civil Rights march, it shocked the World and set the agenda for next twenty years violence. Picture of the dead and contemporary film clips of the paratroopers moving in. Geogrpahical profiles of Derry. Bishop Edward Daly on the feeling of disbelief in Derry. Then intense fury and anger, the greatest recruiting agent for the IRA says Ivan Cooper. Government appoint Lord Widgery to hold inquiry over twenty days, he exonerated the Soliders, Daly gives reaction. Programme finds flaws in Widgery findings and for first time interviews Soliders who were there. Paratrooper actors tell of split second choices, kill or be killed, film of events during the day 30 January 1972 beginning with singing marchers, Michael Bradley recalls happy atmosphere. Bogside had no Army patrols then, IRA carried weapons openly. Film clip of IRA, Brian Cashinella (Times journalist) recalls, the CRA march was banned. Film details what happened when march meet Army roadblock. Contemporary film clips of this and following riots, with voice overs, then a Paratrooper Pte recalls abuse from marchers, frustration of Army high command explained, journalist recalls, Major Gen Robert Ford (September 1971) interview on use of tougher measures. In Derry that was the Paratroopers, Ivan Cooper (SDLP) comments on Paratroopers, Damien Donaghy (a youth) recalls being shot in leg, he denies rioting. In this week February 1972, the Solider who shot him says different, this was fifteen minutes before main shooting, Betty and William Curran two marchers saw shooting, they explain what they saw. John Johnstone was shot near Donaghy, the Soldier says he was nail bomber. Curran refutes this, no nail bombs, Widgery agreed but overlooked Paratroopers perjury. After this Paratroopers ordered in, the journalist recalls Ford saying go on the Paratroopers, go and get them, film clips of Rossville flats, eighteen minutes they kill thirteen people, nine in Glenfada flats, four at rubble barricade. At press conference later, the Cardinal accuses the troops of murder, Derek Wilford (Lt.Col.) views in interview. Who fired first is still major controversy. Soldiers say they fired at gunmen using 'multiple weapons', civilan witnesses talk over photographs, he seen no gunmen. Bishop Edward Daly tells of seeing Soldiers firing in the kneeling position, he says no fire on them, it was murder of unarmed people. Ivan Cooper tells of speaking to PIRA leaders on no violence at march, he accepts undertaking, the OIRA also gave assurance. Programme says three OIRA mavericks with guns were near Rossville flats, a photograph exists of man with shot arm, Daly recalls screaming at him. Paddy Walsh recalls shooting in Charmberlain Street hitting house, he told Widgery he fired warning shots, did this lead to Army opening fire. Paratroopers side given, one hundred and fifty eye-witnesses, only Gerald Donaghy a PIRA Fianna boy had Republican connections. Paratroops reluctant to tell stories one claims up, Jack Duddy (17) the first to die, Daly tells what he saw, famous clip of him with hankerchief up, Michael Bradley admits throwing stones, and he was shot, film clip of him going into ambulance, body put in beside him, he breaks down, it was Pat Doherty, Hugh Gilmore (17) Frankie Mellon retells seeing him shot as he run away, still photographs, Geraldine Richmond account, includes killing of Hugh McGuigan with white hankerchief, 1972 clip of Paratroopers on their regrets, they maintain they shoot bombers, Lord Widgery did say some Paratroopers shooting bordered on the reckless, more stills shown. John O'Kane retells how his brother-in-law was shot with his hands in the air, film clip of him on the ground, reconstruction of paratroops on being fired on and not seeing gunman; the stress they feel. The hands of three of those shot had traces of lead particles on them and Widgery concluded that they had fired guns. Paul Coyle recalls William Nash's shooting (who had traces of lead). How did the lead get on the victims' hands? Some of the bodies were removed from the scene by soldiers who had fired weapons and it is possible the lead particles were transferred from the soldiers to the victims. Ivan Cooper on scene at hospital where soldiers lifted bodies in and out of vehicles. Programme does test to prove that lead can be transferred in this manner. Malachy Coyle recalls shooting of Jim Wray who had lead particles on his hands; still photographs used. Wray worked with lead. It's clear that the paratroops did shoot a lot of innocent people. Widgery's report compounds the situation. Bishop Daly opinions on cover-up.
