Statement by David Ford, then leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland (APNI), following two days of discussions in Belfast regarding the devolution of policing and justice powers, (27 January 2010)

"A deal is still possible and we now need a calm and responsible approach from all parties to take the process the final mile.

We are too close to a successful resolution to this matter for negative elements to derail the progress made to date.

Alliance will continue to play a positive and constructive role, and we implore others to do the same at this critical time.

People need to realise the consequences of failure and must understand the need for urgent progress.

I would also like to express our gratitude to the Taoiseach and Prime Minister for clearing their schedules to take part in the talks - their role has been an extremely positive one."
