Second statement telephoned to the Irish News in Belfast on Tuesday 18 August 1998 at 11.35pm. The statement was issued by the "real" Irish Republican Army (rIRA) and was accompanied by a codeword

"As a direct result of the Omagh tragedy and also in response to the appeals of Bertie Ahern [the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister)] and others we are currently embarking on a process of consultation on our future direction.

In the meantime all military operations have been suspended from 12 midnight."
