Robert McCartney (33) Catholic
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Irish Republican Army (IRA)?
McCartney was involved in a fight at Magennis's Bar in May Street, Belfast. He was later found stabbed and unconscious in nearby Cromac Street. He died from his wounds. [His family have accused Irish Republican Army (IRA) members of having been involved in the killing. The IRA initially denied responsibility for the killing however on 25 February 2005 it announced that it had expelled three of its members.] |

Stephen Nelson (55) Protestant?
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Ulster Defence Association (UDA)
Severely beaten during an attack on 19 September 2004 while working at a disco in the Chimney Corner Hotel on the Antrim Road, Newtownabbey. Left in a coma following the attack and died from his injuries on 18 March 2005. [On 18 May 2005 the Police Service for Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that Mr Nelson was killed by a gang of Ulster Defence Association (UDA) men. There was speculation that the motive for the killing was that Nelson attempted to stop the UDA from selling drugs at the disco. The police described the attack as "brutal and horrendous".] |

Jameson Lockhart (25) Protestant

Shot dead while driving a lorry on the lower Newtownards Road in east Belfast. [The BBC reported that a "senior Loyalist" had blamed the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) for the attack. It was also reported that Lockhart was "an associate" of the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF). The killing was part of a feud between the UVF and the LVF.] |

[It was alleged in the media that Gray had been a former 'Brigadier' of the UDA in east Belfast but had been forced out of the organisation in April 2005. Media reports contained speculation that the killing was carried out by the UDA.] |

Abducted from a house outside Armagh before being shot three times and his body dumped at Farnaloy Road near Keady, South Armagh. [Police speculated that the killing had been carried out by dissident republicans with whom he was believed to be linked.] |

Stephen Montgomery (30s) Catholic

Found unconscious with head injuries on Jamaica Road, Ardoyne. He died later in hospital. The police assumed he had been the victim of a 'hit-and-run' car driver. [On 24 February 2005 the Red Hand Defenders (RHD), a cover name previously used by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), claimed that it had killed Montgomery. However, no codename was given and his family dismissed the claim of responsibility.]

Lisa Dorrian (25) Catholic?

Disappeared following a party at a caravan site in Ballyhalbert, County Down. The Police Service for Northern Ireland (PSNI) believe she has been killed but to date her body has not been recovered. [There was local speculation that members of the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) were responsible for her disappearance. There was also speculation that one motive may have been related to drugs.]

Joseph Rafferty (29) Catholic

Shot dead outside his flat in the Ongar housing estate in west Dublin, Republic of Ireland . [It has been claimed by Rafferty’s family that he had been involved in a dispute with a family from south Dublin and was threatened on a number of occasions that he would be killed by the IRA. The person suspected of the killing is alleged to have been a former member of the IRA and is alleged to be a member of Sinn Féin.]

Stabbed five times in the back as he walked home with two friends along Somerton Road in north Belfast. [Police described the attack as "random" and said they had not established a motive. There was some speculation, reported in the media, that the killing was sectarian.]
