Chilean Arpilleras

The exhibition of Chilean arpilleras took place at the Harbour Museum, Derry, from 8 February 2008 until 19 April 2008. A total of 17 Chilean arpilleras were on display. The following page provides brief details of the arpilleras that appeared in the exhibition. 'Click' on the photographs to see a larger version. For a full description of each of the arpilleras see the Chilean Catalogue, 2008, [PDF; 709KB]. (Photographs below by Martin Melaugh unless otherwise stated.)

The combined exhibition of Irish and international quilts and Chilean arpilleras was the result of a collaboration between Derry City Council Heritage and Museum Services and The Junction with guest cruator Roberta Bacic.

17 Arpillera, Roberta Bacic:
In addition to the 16 arpilleras catalogued above, an extra one was displayed alongside the main exhibition. This arpillera was made in early 2008 in Chile, and was given to the curator as a gift. It was created by one of the workshops that still work on arpilleras incorporating present themes.

Arpillera, Gaby Franger: Cueca Sola / They Dance Alone
As a result of a special request this arpillera was displayed in The Museum of Free Derry. Unlike the arpilleras at the Harbour Museum this one was displayed in a glass case. It was also the only Chilean piece that was outside the collection at the Harbor Museum. This arpillera was produced using the same concept and topic as that shown in number 12 above.
