Since the end of the original The Art of Survival exhibition - of arpilleras (Chilean wall hanging textiles) and Irish and international quilts in Derry, 8th February to 19th April 2008 - Roberta Bacic has acted as curator for a number of follow-up exhibitions and other events. This page provides some details about these exhibitions and events, and lists future ones. See also the page with details of the story quilts and arpilleras that were displayed at The Verbal Arts Centre from 2008 to 2013.

Exhibition
Title: Conflict Textiles collection
This exhibition features six pieces from the Conflict Textiles collection, an international collection of quilts, arpilleras and wall hangings, which has been developed by Chilean curator and human rights advocate Roberta Bacic over the last three decades. Currently the collection is being transferred to Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Archive on a phased basis.  Pieces from the collection will be permanently exhibited at the Tower Museum and Guildhall on a six-month rotating basis.

This exhibition incorporates both international and Brazilian arpilleras.

Affected by Dams: Sewing Rights showcases 25 Brazilian arpilleras made between 2013 and 2015 by women affected by dams from different parts of Brazil. It has been organized by participants of  the Movement of People Affected by Dams  (MAB).

    Arpilleras are a textile applique technique with a long history of subversive resistance. Join Disobedient Objects contributor and independent curator Roberta Bacic, and learn more about the history of arpilleras through a workshop on how to make your own arpillera doll. Please feel free to bring scraps of material with you of personal significance to incorporate into your doll. This workshop has limited spaces, please sign up on the evening. No sewing skills are required.

    Title: Sew to Speak – Human Rights
    This exhibition is an integral part of the international conference Sew to Speak: Narrative Textiles in Human Rights and Healing Practices.
    This bilingual English/Spanish conference will bring together women from different parts of the world who create textiles on a variety of themes: human rights, healing of trauma, and women’s empowerment. The exhibition itself features arpilleras which focus on the violations of four of the human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Within the overall conference, through the medium of inputs, experiential workshops and a shared display of textiles it is anticipated that new insights and connections will be developed and a worldwide network of women supported to continue their empowering work within their communities.

    This documentary Film by Gayla Jamison highlights the struggle of Chilean women against the repressive dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. It was complemented by an exhibition of 12 Chilean arpilleras and is part of a wider programme of political film and theatre with a focus on Chile.

    Other info: Three plays were staged at the MAC as part of this Chilean season of political theatre with local company Prime Cut, to which University of Ulster contributed an extracurricular programme.
    A post-play debate on the theme of “Women in post conflict” took place immediately after the staging of “Villa” & “Discurso” on May 29th. A pre-play roundtable discussion “Making memories” accompanied “Tejas Verdes” on June 3rd.
    arpillera On the 10 of June an arpillera workshop was facilitated by Roberta Bacic and Marlene Milner for Lighthouse and Community Dialogue Men's Photography Group.     • Morning and afternoon knitting sessions and reading room sessions will also take place in the Verbal Arts Centre on March 8th. For the duration of the exhibition, reading room sessions (with closed groups), focusing on themes relating to International Women’s day, will take place in a number of venues throughout Derry/Londonderry.
    • Wool Against Weapons, Knitting sessions will be led by Caroline Kuyper, in the Verbal Arts Centre on March 8th.  Participants will be invited to knit a small square, 15 of which make up a baby blanket, contributing to a seven mile scarf, the purpose of which is to highlight the weapons industry, and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. At the end of the campaign, Saturday 9th August 2014 to mark Nagasaki Day, the baby blankets that make up the scarf will be donated to refugee camps to be used by displaced mothers from war torn countries. http://www.woolagainstweapons.co.uk/

Its main objective is to promote the reparation for human rights violations that took place between 1946 and 1988. It is the outcome of an agreement reached by the Ministry of Justice of the Federal Republic of Brazil, delivered through its Amnesty Commission
